Wisdom Is The Principle Thing

Proverbs 4:7

"Wisdom is the principle thing, therefore get wisdom, and in all thy getting get understanding"

Here the bible puts a high value on wisdom and admonishes the believer to get wisdom and get understanding. In  this world wisdom and knowledge abounds in just about every sphere of life that one can imagine. Although worldly wisdom can be used to a certain extent, it is Godly wisdom that the Christian needs to navigate his way successfully through a Godless world.

This God kind of wisdom comes directly from the word of God. This kind of wisdom is an absolute must have for the believer to live a victorious life this side of eternity. King Solomon new this when he prayed to be given an understanding heart to judge between right and wrong, discern between good and bad, and to lead the people that God had chosen for Himself. Solomon's prayer pleased God so much that not only did He grant Solomon's request but declared  there would be no one as wise, and among men this is still true today. 1 Kings 3:3-13

Wisdom can be defined as spiritual knowledge applied.  God breathed knowledge applied to everyday life is what Christian wisdom is all about. Our Creator desires that every one of His children be armed with this kind of knowledge. It is needed for our enemy is crafty indeed, and the natural mind can not do battle with this enemy. With this wisdom a believer can discern between right and wrong, defeat his spiritual enemy, and live victoriously.

Wisdom is the principle thing, therefore get wisdom. But how, you may ask, do I get this wisdom?

Every bit of knowledge that comes from God comes by revelation. It is God breathed, received and understood in the spirit (heart) of man. It is imparted by the Holy Spirit through the Word.

Dear reader do you desire this kind of wisdom? Then do as Solomon did and pray for it, for God will surely answer you.  Scripture says that "the Lord giveth wisdom, out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding" But we must cry out after knowledge, we must seek it as we would treasure, "then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God". Proverbs 2:1-11

I have found that wisdom comes from spending time with the Lord, reading His word, and pondering those things He reveals to me. There is something about getting quiet with the Lord, its where He speaks to the heart. I'm not saying He can't speak to you anywhere because He can, but its in those quiet uninterrupted times that His still small voice can be heard clearly. Its when the mind is still that God can impart wisdom unhindered.

A good example from scripture that illustrates a man receiving revelation knowledge is found in Matthew 16: 13-17

'When Jesus came  into the coasts of Caesarea Philipi, He asked His disciples, saying, whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, some say that thou art John the Baptised, some Elias, and others Jerimias, or one of the prophets. He sayeth unto them, but whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, blessed art thou Simon Barjona for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee but my Father which is in heaven"

Notice that all of the disciples, except Peter,  answered with what they had heard from other people (natural wisdom). These disciple were just repeating what they had heard, this is earthly wisdom based on facts as seen and understood with the natural mind. There was not one scrap of revelational knowledge in their answers. But Peter's answer was different, he declared that Jesus was the Christ. Jesus tells Peter that he was blessed because man did not reveal this to him but His Father in heaven. It was revelational knowledge imparted to Peter from God Himself. How different this knowledge is, the world dose not understand this kind of knowledge because it is spiritually discerned . By it the Christian wages warfare against the enemy pulling down every strong argument against the glorious gospel.

King Solomon lead the Hebrew nation and wrote most of the book of Proverbs all through revelational knowledge which was then applied (wisdom) to everyday life.

A good place to start receiving this kind of wisdom would be from the book of Proverbs. If you were to spend some time reading and pondering scripture in this book, I guarantee that by the time you reach the end you will have gained more wisdom than you have right now. God wants you to have it more than you want it. He has promised in His word that if we cry out for wisdom He will give it. Its then up to us to use it wisely, to apply it in our lives. The more we use it the better our lives become, the better our lives become, the more glory God receives.

Hear the promise, "When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul, discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee' Proverbs 2:10-11

Wisdom applied causes us to fair well in life, for it shall protect and preserve. There are many pitfalls that can be avoided by applying sound Godly wisdom. Next time we are tempted to return an insult for an insult we may respond with a soft answer because a soft answer, says scripture, will turn away anger. Next time we hear a bitter debate we might hold our peace, for the wisdom of God would say, he who holds his tongue is wise but the fool blabs out anything and medals in other's affairs. (My paraphrase)

Let me finish with an exhortation from the word.

"Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the fine things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of  life to them that lay hold upon her, and happy is everyone that retaineth her." Proverbs 3:13-18

Lets trust our Heavenly Father to furnish us with Godly wisdom. Lets seek to use it as we should, for His glory. If we fall down let us get up and carry on holding the banner of wisdom close to our hearts.
